Launched as a rival to youtube, megavideo has seen immense growth since its birth. Megavideo was officially launched on August 10th, 2007 to directly compete with youtube. You may remember my last post about downloading megavideo videos back on 13th november(one of my first posts on this blog). I talked about a site called clipnabber which allowed you to download flv files from a number of video streaming sites such as megavideo, youtube, dailymotion, metacafe, google videos, etc. They were a solid site and one of the first to integrate megavideo into the mix but their service has declined in recent months and you can no longer download videos from megavideo. Good news for you megavideo fans is that there are a number of other methods by which you can download megavideo videos. I will be mentioning three such methods today which are guaranteed to work at the time of writing this post and due to their timeless nature, should probably work for many many more months to come.  :D

First Method to Download Videos from Megavideo
Install the popular firefox extension called Downloadhelper. It is able to download any streaming content running in your firefox browser, so you can easily download videos from ANY video streaming sites with a single click. I personally use this method for downloading megavideo videos and it hasn’t let me down so far. It is simple to use and you can find all instructions at their FAQ page. If you are not able to understand their FAQ to learn how to use the extension, then no worries, I will give you a short step-by-step manual to download videos from megavideo.

1. Install Extension.

2. You will notice a small icon (Download Megavideo with DownloadHelper) in the top right hand side of your browser window. If it is not there then right-click on the toolbar and click “customize”. You will certainly see the downloadhelper icon there. Just drag it where you want it to be on your toolbar.

3. Now, whenever you are on a site with streaming content, the downloadhelper button will animate and become coloured. Just click on the button and you will see the link to the different streaming files. Most likely there will only be one file when surfing sites likes megavideo, youtube, dailymotion, etc. Just click the file and the download will begin. :)

Second Method to Download Megavideo Videos

Although I recommend everyone to use the above method of downloading megavideo videos, I understand that not everyone may have access to firefox. This method is a simple one by which you will locate the temporary video file that is stored on your hard drive. I will only be explaining how to use this method with internet explorer because if you have firefox, then using the first method should be enough.

1. Go to your video on any streaming site and let it load to 100%.

2. Next, you will locate the temporary file in the temporary files folder. To view it you should go to C:\Documents and Settings\*USERNAME*\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files. You will need to have the “Show hidden files and folders” option enabled in your folder options to be able to get there. You could also view your hidden files and folders by going to “Tools -> Internet Options -> Settings -> View Files” in your internet explorer browser.

3. Once you have the temporary files folder opened, sort it in descending order by size. Your video file will most probably be one of the biggest on the list. It will be a random long-string of characters. A couple of things you could do to identify your specific file:

  • Check the “Internet Address” column. Your file should have something like “megavideo” in there.
  • Check the “Last Accessed: column. Your file should have the same exact date and time when you first viewed the video in your browser.

4. Once you have found your file, just copy and paste it to your desired location. Rename the file to your liking and include “.flv” at the end.

5. You will need a FLV player to play the file. VLC Media Player is also able to play FLV files. You could also use a converting software to convert the file to your desired format.

Third Method to Download Megavideo Videos

I have covered two ways to download videos from megavideo using both firefox and internet explorer. The third method works on both of these browsers. Internet Download Manager is a popular download manager used by thousands of people worldwide. In the newer versions of IDM, support for downloading streaming flv files has been added which means you can download videos from all of your favorite streaming websites. IDM has a 30 day trial version which you can use but after the 30 days are over, you will need to either register your IDM or uninstall it.

1. First, download IDM from their download page.

2. Install IDM.

3. Go to any streaming page and view a video.

4. You will notice a “Download this video” button on the top right corner of the video. Click it.

5. Your download will begin. The file will be saved in FLV format.

Here are a couple of screens to help you with downloading megavideo videos:

So there you have it, 3 ways to download videos from megavideo. If you have any trouble with any of these methods or any suggestion for me, just comment below.

    The second method doesn’t seem to work.
    I can find the right file in the temporary files folder as mentioned above. But when I try to copy & paste, it errs out saying some other program is using the file so..can’t copy it.
    If I close IE or firefox…the file disappears.

  2. Fahad says:

    Hmmm weird. I can copy the file even if I have the video playing in IE. And the file doesn’t get deleted even if I close my browser.
    Are you using vista or xp and what version of IE are you using?

  3. Jérémy says:

    Salut ! Moi j’ai un probleme avec l premiere methode parce que Megavideo limite le visionnage a 61 min alors avec le prog ne prends pas tout le film en entier !
    Si t’aurais un tuyau !
    Merci

    Is there any information about this subject in other languages?

    Thank you so much for the info!

    I used the first method (and downloaded the converter) and it worked perfectly on the first video I tried it with. I was able to download and convert the video to mp4 and transfer it to my iPod.

    However, it doesn’t seem to work anymore. Do you have any idea what I might be doing wrong? :(

  10. Fahad says:

    @nessa
    Hmm, it always works for me.
    You could restart your firefox browser and reopen the video you are wanting to download. It should then probably work just like before. Although, I haven’t had this problem ever.

    salut! voilà j’ai essayer d’utiliser tes 2 premières méthode, j’ai télécharger DownloadHelper y a les 3 bille colorés et tout mais quand je veut télécharger à la fin de ce téléchargement (qui dure bizarrement 2 à 3seconde…) j’essaye de lire le fichier et il ne trouve pas de programme adapté (g VCL windows média et realplayer)

    alors j’ai essayer de télécharger un megavideo avec realplayer, ça a marché enfin plus ou moins… car je n’ai que la première demi heur du film (a plus de 27 min le film se coupe alors qu’il y a une duré de 1h30!

    j’ai essayer ta deuxième méthode mais qd j’arrive a temporary files je ne tombe que sur des dossiers vides nommé ex: BGLKJHY

    voilà je crois que je suis maudite xD
    j’ai besoin d’aide!
    Merci d’avance
    Sofia

    Hi Sofia.

    Lorsque vous téléchargez le fichier à partir de downloadhelper, renommer et ajouter “. Flv” à la fin. Il s’ouvre alors dans VLC.

    Aussi, je ne sais pas si sur realplayer Je ne vous aider même si il vous devriez essayer la 3ème méthode qui est la plus susceptible d’aller travailler amende. Try it.

    De toute façon, je suis en train d’utiliser Google Translate pour transformer ce texte en français afin que vous mai ne pas comprendre. Je ne parle français bien que mon site est traduit en français en raison de la traduction automatique.

    J’espère que cette méthode fonctionne pour vous.
    Have a nice day!

    When you download the file from downloadhelper, rename it and add “.flv” at the end. It will then open in VLC.

    Also, I dont know about realplayer so I cant help you out there although you should try the 3rd method which is most likely going to work fine. Try it.

    Anyways, I am using Google Translate to convert this text to french so you may not understand it. I dont speak french although my site is translated in french due to machine translation.

    I hope this method works for you.
    Have a nice day!

    Salut,
    tout d’abord je voulais te dire que tes méthodes ont toutes l’air bien. J’ai essayer de passer par DowloadHelper avec Firefox. Je lance la vidéo sur mégavidéo, et commence a downloader en flv en passant par DH. Mais le truc c’est que même comme ça MVidéo me dit vous avez atteint la limite de visionnage…J’ai essayer de changer de IP en relancant ma DartyBox et effacer mes cookies mais ca change rien…Peut être j’ai un IP fixe je sais pas si j suis dégroupé ou pas…enfin bref je suis même pas sûr des mots que j’utilise lol, mais tu pourrais m’aider a passer par DownloadHelper ou autre sans avoir la limite de temps qui revienne. C fait un moment j’essaye pleins de trucs rien ne marche…merci d’avance!!!

  15. Anonymous says:

¿Alguna solucion?
    Saludos.

    I dont this is seems to work in vista, microsoft really messed up a lot when It comes to vista I dont care how much they advertise it. You can doctor up a pile of steaming hot crap to look nice… but its still a pile of steaming hot crap. I do have to give them credit though they did do a few things right … but back to topic. I dont think that the storage path in vista is the same as in xp, I’m going to load xp on a beater comptuer of mine and try and see how it work out. I know it doesnt show up in the temp folder for vista though.

  18. do i need to buff first the video in 100% for second method?

  19. Fahad says:

    Yes, ofcourse you need to let it load 100%. I said that in the steps above as well.

  20. =( says:

    mais maintenant que mégavidéo limite à 72 minutes le temps de visualisation il est impossible de télécharger leur vidéos via IDM, real player … comment faire? ils ont trouvé une parade qui fait qu’au bout de 72 minutes la vidéo ne charge plus ce qui fait que lorsque qu’on la télécharge via IDM ça ne marche pas ou via real player la vidéo n’est pas entièrement chargé =(

  27. carlo says:

    Acuerdate que megavideo tiene su tiempo limite para ver video que son 72 min y tambien lo mismo para descargarlos tiene un tamaño especifico y no se puede descargar una pelicula completa. bye

  29. t0my says:

    hey. does the last method do work? because i heard that it might fail to download the file .

  30. Fahad says:

    @tomy
    It works. I have been using the above mentioned methods for a while now and I only post working stuff unlike many blogs which mention a useless program that doesn’t fulfill its jobs. :)

  31. t0my says:

    @fahad

    hmm….ok i see.
    but for me i actually experienced it. when i download it till like 22%, the download will be broken and i will have to re-download from the start again.
    any idea how to prevent it??

  32. t0my says:

    i had tried the first method and it didnt work quite well.
    i normally can download the file using the link they given and i just copy and keep entering the link till the ’save as’ thing pop up. it do works most of the time.

  33. Fahad says:

    @tomy
    I have tried the last method several times and haven’t gotten a problem. Although, I can see how it may become a problem since megavideo may have updated its algorithms in which case, it can probably detect if you are viewing the episode or downloading it through other means. I am not sure though.

    The first method is the best and most reliable one that I have found and I use it almost 90% of the time. I have to use the third method when I am using Internet explorer though. The first method does have its problems though because it sometimes does not animate and you are unable to download your file until you reload the page. That is the plugins fault. It should work very nicely though.

    If you are having problems with the 1st and 3rd method, then I would suggest the 2nd method which is also very reliable although it is a bit hard to understand but am pretty sure you can figure it out with the steps that I have mentioned. Do try it.

  34. t0my says:

    @fahad.
    hmm….thks anyw.
    but i do have some problem in loading the show. when it starts to load, at a certain point of time it will be shown that it is completely load to the end(a slight dark grey colour thingy ), but actually it is not. have u ever met this problem before?
    and when i play the video to a certain point, it will pause at there, and when i drag it to the(for example 1:xx:xx timing), it will hang or load again.

    • Fahad says:

      I have not had the problem that you said(about loading the file completely).

      And I have on several occasions started the video from the middle but I have never got any problems. Although, I think you will not be able to download the video if you start in the middle or something.

  37. Diana says:

    I used the first method and was able to a download a file from megavideo. When I tried playing it using VLC player, it shows that the file is 41 minutes long (the length of the show I was downloading), but no picture or audio appears. Do you have any suggestions on how to overcome this problem? Thanks.

  38. Jammin says:

    hey! Just wanted to mention that usually the megavideo thing lasts only 72 min and so we cant really ‘watch’ the whole video – do we have to ‘buffer’ the video 100% or watch it? cuz its not showing up in my temporary internet folder ( and i know this method has worked for videos uploaded on facebook etc as well – so im wondering what the poblem could be…..

    and also…with firefox – i agree with what one person has said – the video doesnt download fully ( e.g 73%) and then stops…any suggestions?

  39. Kathy says:

    Thanks for great info. I went and got IDM and I am trying it right now, download started quick.

    I have a question tho, Does downloading the video bypass that nagging time limit that MegaVideo has?

  40. Fahad says:

    @Diana
    Have you tried another media player?

    @Jammin
    You dont have to watch the video. Just start it loading and you should be able to find it in the temp. folder. Also, I haven’t had problems with the 73% thing you said, so I cant comment on it.

    @Kathy
    If you download through IDM then you should not have to worry about the time limit.

  41. Yanak says:

    I have been looking for this solution. It really helps thanks :)

    Do I need to let it buffer 100% for the first method?

    … wow…. it must be worked for some…. but it doesn’t work… using downloadhelper ,I download it and download as Flashgot.. then it suddenly stop like saying error on IDM…. then I try to download direct by using Method three… guess what…? the same thing…. BAM error message comes out from IDM…it’s loaded at 40 -60% though….. it’s stop there…:(

  47. Leona says:

    I just wanted to say that I use DownloadHelper on Firefox. It worked great when I first started using it with MegaVideo, but now I think they have caught on and have done something to their links. Once I start the download I close the window with the video playing as this is supposed to stop the video so your time limit is not supposed to be affected. But recently, it’s changed and it comes up saying I have reached my limit and have to wait the required time. Just letting ppl know the issues I’ve had.
